“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Nipmuc Drama Guild presents “The Wizard of Oz” this weekend after weeks of rehearsal. The musical is based upon the popular 1939 film, which in turn was based on a 1900 novel by L. Frank Baum.
Stars include Meg Paul as Dorothy, Ian Burke-Perez as Scarecrow, Michael Evans as Lion, and Tommy Doyle as the Tin Man.
The audience will hear classic songs from the movie, penned by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, including “The Merry Old Land of Oz” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard.”
The familiar narrative tells of Dorothy Gale, a young girl living on a Kansas farm who is magically transported to the land of Oz when a cyclone hits. Dorothy and her dog Toto encounter friends and enemies as they “follow the yellow brick road” to find a legendary wizard.
In the end, after revealing the wizard as an ordinary man, Dorothy returns to Kansas using her own powers, realizing “there’s no place like home.”
Performances are at Nipmuc Regional High School located on Pleasant Street in Upton. Tickets can be purchased online – $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
