Thirty-six fire personnel from eight towns battled a brush fire on Clinton Street in Hopkinton for hours this afternoon.

Hopkinton Fire Chief Ken Clark said the blaze, which at one point encompassed 40 acres of wooded area, was called in at 11:50 a.m. Sunday.

Clark said when responders arrived at the scene the fire covered about three-quarters of an acre, but it spread quickly as the wind picked up.

Firefighters from Hopkinton, Milford, Ashland, Holliston, Upton, Southborough, Westborough, Hopedale and Framingham, along with members of Massachusetts Forest Fire Control, were able to contain the fire to 12.8 acres by 4 p.m., Clark said.

“It’s hard to determine a point of origin when a brush fire starts in the middle of the woods like that,” Clark said.
