Utility Company Phone Scam:
At least 24 businesses in the Boston area were targeted!
Unknown person calls claiming to work for a utility company (usually N-Star or National Grid). Caller tells the victim they are behind on payments and risk getting utility shut off. Caller appears to know the exact amount due for the current billing cycle. Victims are often told their payment either bounced or did not arrive.
At least 2 incidents in Cambridge and Lynn “a representative” of the utility company showed up and threatened to cut power. (victim observed a Nstar van outside his business).
They will instruct you to purchase a “green dot” prepaid card in the amount owed and then call back and relay the unique scratch-off number on the back.** If anyone shows up at your house/business please call the police immedialty !!
ALWAYS call the customer service number on your bills to confirm any outstanding balances.
