Upton Kids Sail the Roseway

roseway2Lucas Vanslette, Brett Siegel, Thomas Hawkins, Taylor Nasuti, and Mackenzie Matckie were on board the Roseway for an 8th grade overnight for school. They currently attend the McAuliffe Regional Public Charter School, an experiential learning middle school in Framingham. They sailed in Boston harbor last week, crewing on board the Roseway. One of the school’s motto’s is “we are crew, not passengers” and they are put it to good use last week.

Lucas Vanslette said what he found most exciting was “we got to climb the rigging and felt like we were part of the pirates of the Caribbean.” During the expedition the students learned the history of the Roseway, learned how to tie ship knots and at night dropped the anchor and took turns on “anchor watch.”  They put up the sails , climbed the rigs and learned how to read navigation charts.

When asked about their experience, Tom Hawkins said, “the whole thing was amazing,” and Mackenzie Matckie said, “I really liked climbing up the bowsprit. That was really cool.”
