Timber Rattlesnake found in Upton

timberrattlesnakeIt is being reported by a local mom that a Timber Rattlesnake was found in the area of Tattersall’s Machine on Route 140 in Upton. These types of snakes are  venomous! It appears to be a baby. If this is not an abandoned pet, it’s Mom is not far away.

Here is a link to a Timber Rattlesnake information page.

This is not the image of the snake in Upton but a stock photo

  1. Is the picture posted the actual Upton snake or a stock photo?

No doubt Upon once long ago had a rattlesnake population, but unless a clear picture of the actual snake is availalbe skepticism is warrented. It could be a case of mistaken identity. The eastern hognose snake occurs in Upton. It has markings that resemble a rattlesnake but has no rattle and is harmless.

  2. Just found another link:

    “Snakes of Massachusetts
    Timber Rattlesnake
Crotalus horridus (36-60″, up to 74”)
MA Status: ‘Endangered.’ Illegal to harass, kill, collect or possess.
“They are not particularly aggressive and bites are rare. In Massachusetts, rattlesnakes are so rare that they are almost never encountered by people.”
