Today was a great day to be at the beach! Hot temps, cool water, and a slight ocean breeze to keep you cool.
Wells Beach Maine is particularly nice. If you’re lucky you can score free parking, which is a plus. The water is usually ice cold, sometimes “turn your toes blue” cold. Today the water was the warmest I ever remember it, warmer than Jones Beach New York.
I was just about to chill and read my book when I realized a woman had fallen in the water, just feet from me, and couldn’t get up. Within a minute she was surrounded by several people attempting to help her get to her feet, she appeared faint and was unable to stand or sit up. I wondered where the life guard was, after a couple of minutes it was obvious this was not on the lifeguards radar.
I immediately ran to the life guard station. I yelled up to the two girl lifeguards, “There is a woman who has fallen, she needs help.” They replied, “What?” I yelled at them, “Someone needs help!” They responded, “What?” Again I yelled up at them, “Someone needs help!” It was at this time they decided they should remove themselves from their lifeguard chair and speak with me. I attempted to explain to one of the lifeguards that a woman had fallen in the water and needed help. She looked confused. I tried again, she seemed to “get it” but she still looked confused. Finally after another attempt the girl finally “got it.” Ran to the woman, the other lifeguard followed, and within seconds the injured woman was surrounded by 4 lifeguards.
The woman was only feet away from our blanket. The lifeguards called for Beach Rescue, the EMS/Fire Personnel arrived shortly after in their Beach Rescue Jeep. The woman was treated on the scene and removed to another location by Beach Rescue. From where I was, it appeared they did a fantastic job and spent some time convincing the woman she needed treatment. I think everyone agreed she needed treatment, even the non professionals.
Her daughter took photos from the beginning to the end of the event which just seemed funny, but it today’s society I guess you have to document every aspect of a day trip or vacation. Look at me, I had to borrow my daughter’s phone to grab a few photos for Upton Daily.
So even on a relaxing day at the beach there is always news. I know it’s not Upton news but I did see a few familiar Upton faces pass me by today on Wells Beach.
