It’s a small world.
Earlier this week I received an email from Captain Jack Voishnis of Wells Ocean Rescue/Wells Fire Department who requested to speak with the author of the post “Wells Beach Main Beach Rescue.“ He wanted to discuss the intent of the news article as it “seemed to shed both a negative light and a positive light” on their organization.
My first thought was “wow”, how on earth did my post on end up there?
I was able to speak with Captain Voishnis today after a short game of phone tag. He was very friendly. I explained to him how I write this blog, how it’s about “what’s up” in Upton. I also explained how the incident which unfolded on the beach in front of me was something I would “cover” for my blog, so I decided to write about it.
He was reaching out to me because he wanted to be sure everyone was doing their job appropriately.
I went over the incident, basically how it is written in the blog. Although I did include some unattractive facts I left out, like the visual of a 46 year old woman with a bad back and 40 extra pounds running through the soft sand to the lifeguard station – YIKES! By the way my kids imitate the run, they think it’s quite funny.
Captain Voishnis explained it is often difficult to hear what people are saying up in the lifeguard chairs. The station which responded to the incident is the main station for radio communications which makes it even harder to hear. From the girls perspective once I approached the chair and alerted them that someone was in trouble they were scanning the water.
Although my perspective is the same I did feel it was important to share the lifeguards perspective as their jobs are important. Lifeguards are responsible for supervising the safety and rescue of swimmers and surfers, a hefty responsibility. On another day during my vacation at Wells Beach I witnessed a male lifeguard hop on his board and swim out to two swimmers who were in risk of being in danger. After he spoke with them the swimmers came closer to the shoreline.
I told Captain Voishnis I would share the lifeguards view with the Upton Daily blog readers.
I still can’t believe that my little Upton blog reached the Wells Ocean Rescue/Wells Fire Department. Social Media is amazing.
