Just about 20 boats made a splash at Upton’s 6th Annual Recyclable Boat Race. Some finished still floating, others swam back to shore. It was a great night. The AJG Express was first to finish afloat with Apollo 3 a close second. The SS Bacon sank before they left shore.
White Lightening was by far the most spirited crew with Colin Rooney and Corey Eugster on board. They did a fantastic job pumping up the crowd and boaters before the race.
After the race competitors and spectators enjoyed roasting marshamallows by the campfire and making s’mores.
Rick and Dave Kennedy were acknowledged by Recreation Commission Director Mary Cortese for being pioneers of the program. “They help design the boats and really helped to make this a success.”
Russ Wood was awarded “Oldest Competitor.” He was confident in his construction as he was the only one who participated in street clothes and he did finish the race without getting wet.
All types of awards were given, everyone left the event with a title. From ‘Most Absorbant’ awarded to SS Lightening to ‘Judges Choice’ awarded to SS Bacon. All winners were given a certificate and a trophy. Upton Daily will post all winners later this week when the list is made available.
At the end of the event Colin Rooney took the loud speaker and acknowledged Mary’s hard work and asked the crowd to thank her. The crowd put their hands together for Mary for organizing Upton’s Annual Recyclable Boat Race.
