Items from 100 years ago found during Upton Town Hall Renovations

While renovations are taking place at the Upton Town Hall buried history is being uncovered. In a series of posts you will be able to view photos of what has been uncovered to date.

Today’s post includes items found underneath the floor of the Town Hall’s Main balcony floor.

One item appears to be a flyer or complaint regarding a scissors companies promise of a lifetime guarantee;questioning how can one company promise to replace your dull or broken scissors for a lifetime. The company is question is the Thomas Manufacturing Company which was located in Ohio. There is also an advertisement from the same company.

Another item is a advertisement for E. Edson Wheeler of Milford Ma, a watch salesman who also will fix your watch.

A Minstrel Program from 1947 where Harrison Bates and Shirley Bates were listed as participants in the show. I wonder if these Bates are related to Jim Bates in town…. comments are welcome if you know for sure!

There is a program for the class of 1947, it is believed to be the 50th reunion from from the class of 1897. Names on the program include: David Clark, Adeline Closson, Lawrence Griffi, Barbara Hillard, Joan Lawrence, Dorothy Marshall, Clement Messenger, Andrew Nelson, Helen Nydam, James Sanders, George Shephard, Annmarie Smith, Jacqueline Strachen, Janice Temple, Ruth Tutle, Shirley Kirby, Dorothy Francis, Elinor Varney, John Robinson, Charlotte Blodgett, Claire Sanders, George Poirer, Henry Walker, and Arthur Fairbanks.

The photos were submitted by the Town Hall Building Committee. All items will be given to the Upton Historical Society and hopefully displayed at the Upton Town Hall dedication ceremony upon completion of the renovations which will hopefully take place in September of 2014.
