Upton Fire Department Called to High School to Investigate Issue with Alarm System

IMG_0347In a conversation with Fire/EMS Chief Goodale, Upton Daily has learned there was an issue with Nipmuc Regional High School’s alarm system. The alarm company placed a call into the fire department to investigate. During the  investigation the Upton Fire Department discovered the batteries in the alarm system were expanding and appeared to be melting. Chief Goodale made the decision to have his team suit up and remove the batteries. The batteries could leak/explode acid making it a hazmat situation.

The batteries have been removed from the building and will be replaced before the opening of school on Tuesday. So no worries about a delay in the start of the school year.

The NHS girls soccer team was just about to begin their second session of tryouts today but was not allowed to enter the building.

The situation developed sometime before 5 p.m. Friday, August 23.
