For the 2013/14 school year, the Mendon Upton school district has added tuition free full-day kindergarten. The change was made to help compete with neighboring districts who do offer free full day K. This change will help keep students in our district and also prepare them for the challenges of Common Core standardized testing. The district also added a curriculum coordinator to develop a standardized curriculum across the district which will be a huge benefit for implementing Common Core. The position is not new to the district. In 2010-2012 the curriculum coordinator position was eliminated due to budget constraints and the district is pleased to be able to reinstate the position.
The district will also be adding two special education teachers, one for Memorial and one for Clough, focusing on grade 3/4 inclusion. The district is also excited to be adding a new computer science teaching position at the high school. The teacher will be qualified to teach AP Computer Science and AP Computer Programming courses.
The additional positions will be added to the district without asking residents to increase their tax contribution.
