Nipmuc added a new team this year, girls varsity volleyball. The volleyball program was introduced to the district by the Nipmuc Volleyball Boosters in the fall of 2011 offering only a JV team. The program has grown considerably with 15 girls trying out in 2011 to 37 girls trying out in 2013. This year the program has 14 girls on varsity and 15 girls on jv.
The girls varsity team played their first match against Holliston last week. Nipmuc held their own and during the first set earned 7 points in a row with Lindsay Doyle serving. Captain Sabrina Hegarty and freshman Kylie Gallagher made some amazing blocks and showed fantastic net work. Setters Maddie Lynnworth and Katie Friberg also displayed great net work and had a great overall showing. Freshman Grace Caughey’s kill was spectacular and Elizabeth Nigro made some great digs. All the girls played well. The team was ultimately out matched by a more experienced team. The girls are working hard and have the determination to win their next match scheduled for Sept 11 against Douglas at home.
