Massachusetts Senate President Pro Tempore Richard T. Moore has named Nipmuc Regional High School Junior Patrick Carey to his newly formed Youth Advisory Council.
Members of the Youth Advisory Council will meet regularly with Sen. Moore to review pending legislation, discuss issues impacting youth, learn about politics and share this information with their individual communities. Students will also provide input on topics including education, health, foster care, adolescent mental health, teen homelessness, juvenile justice reform, economic development and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
In a press release Sen. Richard Moore said, “I believe it is important for me as a state legislator, and legislative leader, to understand their goals, their desire and their concern and their hope for the future.”
Nipmuc Regional High School Principal John Clements expressed Patrick Carey will make a terrific representative, “Patrick is a bright, talented, and driven school leader who has continually looked for ways to give back to the school and community. He is a graduate of the Blackstone Valley Youth Leadership Academy where he began the “Soap for Hope” campaign to provide personal items for local food pantries. The experience he gained in this program and his genuine ambition to give back to the community make him a terrific representative to the Senator’s council.”
Patrick is very excited to work with his fellow council members as well as Senator Moore. “I feel that it is not often that students have a chance to have their voices heard in politics, especially concerning laws that are pertinent to their future. It is wonderful that Senator Moore is giving the students in his district a chance to have our voices heard.” Patrick is anxious to work as part of the group, “This will be a wonderful learning experience for me, my follow council members and Senator Moore, I look forward to contributing what I can.”
Mendon Upton Regional District Superintendent Dr. Maruszczak is remarkably proud of Patrick and his many achievements, ” He is a bright young man who, time and again, has shown that he is deeply committed to our community and larger social issues. I think he is an outstanding choice to serve on this advisory board to the State Senate. I am certainly glad that he was recommended and selected by Senator Moore!”
Patrick Carey is one of 23 students chosen from the fourteen towns that make up the Worcester and Norfolk senatorial district.
Congratulations Patrick!
