On November 16 Nipmuc Regional High School students Anna Young and Taylor Russell organized and hosted Military Run: Support Our Troops. The event was a 5k race which was about getting together, raising funds, and having fun; with the end result of supporting our troops.
Taylor and Anna said the most challenging part of organizing the event was letting people know what they were doing, why they were doing it, and how people could help. They had been told historically this type of event would draw about 100 participants, “Once we got our message out to people we began seeing the results that ended up being better than we anticipated!! We were only expecting about one hundred runners because that is what other runs have gotten in this area in the past. We received 84 people who registered for pre-registration. On the day of the race we only expected to see about 20 new faces!! To our surprise, on race day we received another 91 runners for a total of 175 people participating on race day!!” Anna and Taylor said.
The event raised over $3,500 which will be used to send the care packages to the deployed troops before Christmas.
In addition to raising funds for the troops Taylor and Anna organized a fun event for all who participated. Runners showed up in white, in tutus’, and ready to be covered in paint. .
