At the annual town meeting in May 2013 the town approved changing the Town Clerk position from an elected position to an appointed position but the change could not take place without the governor signing special legislation.
The change was recommended because the position had become more than just issuing dog licenses and other clerical tasks but now requires the knowledge of complex laws.
The Town received word from the state last week that the governor has signed the special legislation, so it’s official, the Upton Town Clerk now holds an appointed position.
