Nipmuc Students Host Lock In Volleyball Tournament Tonight Raising Funds for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

pancanThree Nipmuc Regional High School Students have been working to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness as part of their DECA Community Project. Charlie Ciantra, Jake Hess, and Lauren Campbell have already raised approximately $500 for the cause. Tonight they hope to raise more at the Volleyball Lock in Tournament held at Nipmuc Regional High School.

The event is a great time and loved by the students at Nipmuc. Ryan McFadden hosted the first event in 2011 as a DECA project. He chose pancreatic awareness because his mom had been recently diagnosed. Nipmuc students have embraced the cause and this year Charlie, Jake, and Lauren are taking on the challenge of bringing awareness to the community about pancreatic cancer.

At 10:00 p.m. tonight students participating in the event will arrive at the high school. Shortly after their arrival they will be locked in the school with some amazing staff members who have volunteered their time.  Students create their own teams, team names, and team shirts.  This year there are approximately 300 students participating in the event with a total of 35 teams.

Throughout the night teams will compete to earn a spot in the final match which will most likely be played around 3:00 a.m. When teams aren’t playing students can watch movies in the auditorium or play Xbox games. Although more than likely you will find most students in the gym cheering for their friends who are battling it out on one of the three courts.  Each student pays $5 for general entry or $7 if they want unlimited food for the night.

Charlie, Jake, and Lauren ran a volleyball tournament in November for the middle school which raised approximately $500. It was the first time the event was ran at the middle school, 8 teams participated and many students attended to cheer on their friends.
