Did you shop at Target from 11/29 through 12/15 and used a debit or credit card? If yes read immediately

creditcardtheftTarget has reported up to 40 million credit/debit cards have been compromised during November 29 through December 15.  The stolen data includes customer names, credit and debit card numbers, card expiration dates, the three digit security number on the back, and the embedded code on the magnetic strip.

Reuters reported yesterday hackers were able to steal encrypted personal identification numbers (PINs) writing, “according to a senior payments executive familiar with the situation Target is now reporting PIN (personal identification numbers) were also compromised.” Despite the breach Target said in a press release today, “We remain confident that PIN numbers are safe and secure.”

The thieves who have managed to obtain this data can make counterfeit cards and place your card’s information directly onto the counterfeit card. If you used a debit card during the time period outlined above the hackers may be able  to recreate your debit card in the same way.

If you think your card has been compromised call your credit card company or bank. If you used a debit card call your bank and change your PIN number.

Watch your accounts carefully, it’s common for thieves to test stolen cards first by making small transactions, such as a purchase on iTunes or something from a gas station.  If you do come across any unauthorized charges, be sure to immediately report them to your credit card issuer/bank and contact Target at 866-852-8680.

Cancelling your card and requesting a new one might be the safest way to protect yourself from unwanted charges but you still need be concerned about identity theft. Be sure to check credit reports to make sure someone hasn’t opened up a new line of credit using your information.

Beware of scammers. Never give your credit card or debit card information to anyone who calls you on the phone or to a web site you don’t know. Be suspect of emails claiming that your card has been compromised and you need to input all your information into a fake site. If you need to communicate with Target or your bank, do it directly from contact information.. go to the bank, call the number on your statements, etc.
