William Applegate, a sophomore at Nipmuc Regional High School, is collecting toiletries and cleaning supplies in an effort to support Abby’s House in Worcester.
Abby’s House was one of the first shelters in the U.S. to provide a safe place for women to stay with or without children. Abby’s House is also one of the two family shelters in the area which does not require guests to be on welfare and therefore is not entitled to receive state or federal funding. Abby’s House works with each resident and provides counseling and referrals to community resources. Advocates help residents obtain public benefits, and collaborate with the residents’ other service providers, such as case managers and mental health providers, to ensure they receive the support needed to achieve the greatest possible independence.
Will is collecting supplies for Abby’s House as part of his application portfolio to be accepted into Nipmuc’s National Honor Society.
Cleaning supplies and toiletries can be dropped off in a box at the front office of Nipmuc Regional High School located at 90 Pleasant Street in Upton. Donations will be accepted through Wednesday, January 8 at 2 p.m.
What a wonderful act of giving to others. We should all be very proud of students like Will.
