The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has issued a Measles Alert stating individuals who visited Trader Joes in Framingham on February 15 and 16 have been exposed to the virus.
According to the Mass. Department of Public Health, people who may be in danger of contracting the measles if exposed are:
– Children who have not received their first dose of Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine at 12 to 15 months of age.
– School-age children who have not received their second dose of the MMR vaccine.
– Adults who have not received at least one dose of the MMR vaccine.
– If you are pregnant (or think that you might be) contact your health care provider right away.
– If you have a weakened immune system, contact your health care provider right away.
The first symptoms of measles are like a bad cold-a high fever, a runny nose, sneezing, a sore throat, and a cough. As the cold symptoms start to go away, you will get red spots inside your mouth, followed by a rash all over your body.
The virus is spread when sprayed into the air when an infected person coughs or talks. Other people nearby can then inhale the virus. Measles is very infectious and can stay in the air for up to two hours after the contagious person has left the room.
