Teens report lower rates of drug abuse when parents express concern and monitor behavior. At the same time studies show parents report feeling unprepared to respond to teen’s drug/alcohol use. On March 24 Nipmuc Regional High School will be hosting a substance abuse community forum and discussion to discuss trends, identify the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, and explore what can be done as individuals and as a community to support the health and wellness of Upton’s youth.
With the growing rate of teen heroin use in the state and a recent study showing 60% of all high school seniors do not believe regular marijuana use is harmful it is more important than ever to be informed. Upton has seen two teen heroin overdoses since the beginning of the year, both teens survived. All community members are encouraged to attend this event.
A recent video by Oprah Prime brings light on the fact many teens are being tricked into using heroin. The video includes a former college football players admitting he used to lie about what he was snorting to get others to do it with him. A high school freshman said she didn’t realize she was snorting heroin until she was already addicted. The video also states that caches of marijuana have been seized laced with heroin. Even middle school age children are getting involved with the drug according to the video.
