No contested races and three vacant seats for Upton election

uptonYesterday at 5 p.m. nomination papers for the annual town election were due. According to Upton Town Clerk Kelly McElreath there will be no contested races this year.

So far it appears the election process in Upton will be uneventful.  Last year Upton saw three write in candidates for unopposed positions. Rick Binaco decided to run as a write in candidate against Richard Robinson who had pulled nomination papers for Board of Health. Binaco entered the race late in the game. The final vote count was Robinson 497, Binaco 484. There were also two write-in candidates for school committee where no candidate had pulled nomination papers. Grace Maneri and Liz Fournier both ran a full write-in campaign for the position, Grace Maneri won the seat.

This year eleven incumbents are running unopposed and there are three positions where there will be no candidate on the ballot.  On election day, Monday May 5, 2014, the ballot spot for the three vacant seats will be blank, with a write in available. The person with the most write ins for each position will be offered the opportunity to fill the seat.
