The Division of Animal Health has been alerted to a cluster of confirmed Canine Influenza (Dog Flu) cases in Essex County. This is the first time the Dog Flu has been detected in the Massachusetts. The virus was first detected in Florida in 2005.
The disease is a respiratory-tract illness similar to the more common bordetella respiratory disease, known as kennel cough. Dog flu can produce a hacking-type cough, along with repeated throat clearing and frequent swallowing and lethargy.
The Division of Animal Health are encouraging dog owners who have concerns bout the health of their pet to consult with their veterinarian. Veterinarians dealing with an increased number of apparent ‘kennel cough cases” should contact the Department.
The CDC recommends scheduling an appointment with a vet if your dog has a cough.
There is a vaccine for the Dog Flu.
