On Monday May 26, 2014 hundreds of Upton residents attended Upton’s Memorial Day events to honor and remember those who served and died defending America’s freedom.
The day began with Veterans performing cemetery services at Lakeview Cemetery, Maplewood Cemetery and the Old Burial Grounds. After the cemetery services the Veteran’s led the annual parade. The parade ended at Upton’s Town Common where a Memorial Day Service was held.
Prior to the Roll Calls of the Deceased the Commander of the George L. Wood VFW Post Joe McMahon sang God Bless America. Girl Scout Kelly Locklin read In Flanders Field and the Nipmuc Regional High School Band performed a lovely selection.
The AL Roll Call of Deceased was read by John Robertson and the VFW Roll Call of the Deceased by by Selectman Robert Fleming and Finance Committee member Shawn Craig.
The ceremony was closed with the National Anthem performed by the Nipmuc Regional HS Band. The invocation and benediction was led by Father Larry Breault.
In his closing remarks Officer of the Ceremony John Robertson reminded the community that while today’s ceremony is just a moment in time the freedoms we have today will last a lifetime because of the sacrifices made by the men and women who were remember today.
