Setting Records and Raising Awareness: BVT volleyball team recognized by Side-Out Foundation

BVT Side Out Award

BVT Side-Out Award: The Blackstone Valley Tech 2013 girls volleyball team proudly displays a congratulatory banner naming them winners of the “Hard Hitting Award” from the Side-Out Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness through athletics. The team’s fundraising total $8,532 was the highest amount raised in Massachusetts and among the top totals in the nation.

A banner of a different kind was recently raised inside the Blackstone Valley Tech competition center, as the 2013 girls volleyball team unveiled the “Hard Hitting Award” banner from the Side-Out Foundation.

For the past five years, under the guidance of long-time coach Barbara King of Millbury, the BVT volleyball program has raised over $17,000 to benefit the Side-Out Foundation’s mission of raising breast cancer awareness through athletics. This year, the girls volleyball team’s annual fundraising efforts were given a significant personal boost when King was diagnosed with breast cancer (she is currently in remission with a survival prognosis of 100%). Through various events and collaborations with students from both BVT and area schools, this year’s fundraising total of $8,532 was the largest amount raised in Valley Tech’s history, the largest amount raised this year in Massachusetts, and among the highest totals in the nation.

In accepting the “Hard Hitting Award”, the team gave special thanks to Diamond Chevrolet of Auburn, which made a significant donation in the name of all customers that purchased a vehicle in the month of October, as well as several Valley Tech employees and parents who went the extra mile in supporting the annual fundraising for the Side-Out Foundation.
