Anyone can be victim to a crime.. even the kangaroos at Southwick’s Zoo
When you go away on vacation you want to make sure you do everything you can to keep your home safe. Doing simple things like having a neighbor or friend come in to turn on the lights or collecting your mail can deter a thief. Below you will find a variety of topics and tips on how you can keep your home safe while you are on vacation.
Remember to Lock all Doors and Windows
You should always make sure to lock and secure all doors and windows. In addition to making sure you are locked up be sure to check that frames are firmly attached and window unit air conditioners are removed. Don’t keep a spare key hidden under the doormat or above the door frame, you don’t want to allow a thief easy access to your home. If you have an attached garage, lock the door between the garage and the rest of your home.
Home Security
Make it look like someone is home. One of the main reasons that a thief may attempt to break into your home is because it looks like no one is home. Leaving a couple of lights on, having someone mow your lawn, and putting lights on a timer can keep a burglar at bay. Be sure to stop newspaper deliveries and have someone pick up your mail or have your mail delivery held. Be sure to hide your valuables and leave expensive electronic equipment out of site from window peepers.
Prevent a fire from starting while you’re not home…Secure Appliances and Utilities
Before leaving your home for a few days or weeks, make sure to unplug. Unplugging tvs, computers, appliances, and other items can keep costs down when away as well as prevent potential fires. This will also protect your expensive equipment from power surges if lightening should strike nearby. Turn off or unplug your garage door opener.
Don’t Advertise on Social Media that you are not home
Tell a few trusted neighbors, friends, and family members that you will be out town. Be careful with who you tell online. Posting your vacation plans on Facebook or other social media networks could result in an untrustworthy acquaintance taking advantage of the fact that your home will be unoccupied for an extended period of time. Think twice before posting your favorite vaca photos while you are away. You are safer waiting until you return home.
Let the police know you will be away
Notify the police if you’re going on vacation, especially if you will be away longer than a week.
