Upton Open Space Event

Nighthawk Migration – Sunset – The Moon, Mars, and Saturn

Where: Peppercorn Hill – Crockett Road Parking Area

When: Sunday August 31, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

In the August thousands of Nighthawks pass through Massachusetts on their way to their wintering habitat in South American. The best way to view the migration is from an open field or hilltop near dusk. Last year seven dozen Nighthawks went gliding and circling past the hill tops of Peppercorn Hill. The Open Space Commission is hoping to have the same luck this year and invite you to join them on Sunday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Bring your binoculars, insect repellent, flashlight, sturdy shoes, water, and perhaps a lightweight folding chair. This is best for experience hikes as you must be able to safely hike down steep trails after dark.  In the event of thunderstorms or heavy rains the event will be cancelled.

Those who wish can stay on the hill to view the sunset and a close triangular grouping of the Moon, Mars, and Saturn.
