Mihran “Joe” Matellian, 88 of Hopedale, MA and Wellington, FL passed away peacefully on October 5, 2014. He was a patient at Darcy Hall of Life Care in West Palm Beach, FL. He was born October 13, 1925 in Hopedale, MA and was a 75 year resident of Hill St (White City) prior to his retirement in Wellington FL. He was the eldest son of Kachig and Goulizar (Ehmalian) Matellian. He was predeceased by his brother Hampar “Jimmy” Matellian in 1998, and his long time companion Sally Ann Leary in 2011.
Mihran voluntarily left Hopedale High School after his Junior year, at 17 years old, to serve his country during World War II in the U.S Navy. He served in the Pacific theater as a Radio Man First Class. After serving his country he went on to study accounting at Burdette School in Boston. He was an entrepreneur at an early age and with his brother’s ran a taxi service in Uxbridge, MA during the 1950’s.
In 1964 he and his brothers Togi and Jimmy founded Togi’s Sales and Service in Upton, Ma. They worked together selling and servicing automobiles from 1964 to 2000. The business was a place where he was surrounded by close friends and family. In addition to his military service Joe also served as the Commander at the Armenian American Veterans Organization in Milford Massachusetts (AAVO). He enjoyed horse racing, travel, and fine dining. He retired and lived in Florida for the past 14 years.
He is survived by his brother Toros “Togi” Matellian and sister in-law Grace Matellian. His niece Lori (Matellian) Hall and her husband Mark, his nephew Stephen Matellian and his wife Sandra, his nephew Shawn Matellian and his wife Geanine all of Upton, Massachusetts.
Following a private memorial service he will be buried at Vernon Grove Cemetery in Milford, Ma.
