On Saturday November 15, 2014 the Nipmuc Girls Varsity Volleyball team was presented with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Sportsmanship Award. The team earned the award by demonstrating a sincere commitment to the highest ideals and objectives of sportsmanship during their season of play. Only one team per sport and division state-wide is honored with this award.
According to Nipmuc Volleyball Coach Christine Corey, this was the first time a team has been honored with the sportsmanship award in Nipmuc history.
When asked what makes this team special Corey said, “One word. Respect. They respect themselves, their coaches, school, officials, and opponents. No matter what this group of girls does, on or off the court, they are always participating with pride and to the best of their abilities.”
Nipmuc Athletic Director William Leaver said the team is led by an outstanding coach, “I am extremely proud to be associated with such a classy and selfless group of young people led by not only an outstanding coach but a true role model.”
The Nipmuc Volleyball program this season was made up of two junior varsity teams in addition to the varsity team. Leaver said the positive attitude is seen throughout the entire program.
“The volleyball team has been such an awesome addition to Nipmuc athletics. The players, captains, and coaches have established a team culture that embodies all the best aspects of sportsmanship. They represent our school so well and are truly deserving of this honor,” said Nipmuc Principal John Clements.
