As the Town has done every year, the Upton Veterans’ Memorial Playground is again closed for the winter. When the ground freezes, the playing surface does not move and function as it does in other seasons. Very specific guidelines for playing surfaces are established to ensure the safety of children. When the playing surface is frozen, children may be easily injured when they come into contact with the hard surface. Consequently, the Upton Department of Public Works closes the playground every year to avoid injuries. Once temperatures begin to rise in the spring, surface conditions will be evaluated until the playing surface meets safety criteria.
