Mendon Upton School District Renegotiate Electricity Rates

light bulbAt the December 8, 2014 school Committee meeting Superintendent Dr. Joseph Maruszczak said the contract the district enjoyed with National Grid over the last two years expires on December 28, 2014.  According to Maruszczak National Grid raised their rates by 30% this month.

Maruszczak  said the District was paying 6 and 9/10 per kilowatt and has renegotiated the contract for one year at the rate of 8 ½ cents per kilowatt for nine months and 16 ¾ cents per kilowatt for three months.

The higher rate will be in effect for the end of this term through March then lower to 8 ½ cents from March through November. District Business Assistant Jay Byer said, “I tried to look at how many kilowatt-hours the district used per month. Our biggest month is December. In January we have a few days off and we have a week off in February.”

Maruszczak noted that the district has put a budget freeze in place in response to the anticipated rise in energy costs and the governor’s proposed cuts to regional transportation.

The district plans to renegotiate the contract next December when hopefully the rates will be lower.
