Memorial School tennis court/ice rink
Looks like the Memorial School Ice Rink won’t be opening this year.
According to town manager Blythe Robinson there have been several issues with the berm resulting in a delay in opening.
The Upton Fire Department filled the rink a couple of weeks ago. Shortly after being filled a leak was discovered. Then there was a disparity in the height of the surface resulting in the area not being level and difficult to keep fill. An additional 5 or 6 inches of berm was added unsuccessfully. The latest news is in order to fix the rink a section of fence around the tennis court would need to be buried; which is not an option at this point.
The question for Upton residents now is, where to skate?
Last weekend a person fell through the ice in Hopedale and two dogs required rescuing when they fell through the ice in separate incidents in other towns. All are fine.
When asked about ice safety Upton Fire/EMS Chief Ron Goodale said, “There is risk involved in going out on pond or lake ice. I would advise people right now to keep off of the ice on ponds and lakes.” The chief had recommended residents skate on the Memorial School Rink but that does not appear to be an option this year.
If you are looking to skate outside check out the rink at Patriot Place. Here is a link to public outdoor ice rinks http://www.explore-massachusetts.com/outdoor-ice-skating.html.
Or if you want to skate in warmer conditions there is always http://blackstonevalleyice.com/ in Hopedale.
