Senator Ryan Fattman (R-Webster) announced that he intends to continue the Worcester-Norfolk Youth Council that his predecessor, Sen. Richard T. Moore, created in 2013. The council is comprised of local high school students within the Worcester and Norfolk District who have an interest in discussing ideas concerning youth related issues within the district and across the Commonwealth.
“When I was in high school, I sought out opportunities to become involved in local government” Fattman said. “Giving our students an outlet to share their political and policy ideas is essential to the advancement of our society as a whole. Young people have bright minds and very creative ideas. The Worcester-Norfolk Youth Council will be an additional demographic of constituents that I can listen to and better represent on Beacon Hill”.
Nipmuc Regional High School Senior Patrick Carey was thrilled to hear that Fattman was continuing with the council. Carey said, “The council gave me a much better understanding of how the government works and how to compromise and collaborate with a group on important issues.”
Carey saw first hand how important it is to allow students to have a voice on bills that impact their lives. “I was able to talk with my peers and Senator Moore about what I would like to see the government do in relation to our school curriculum, cell phone use, and a variety of other issues that I did not even realize were negotiable,” Carey said.
If students would like to apply for the Youth Council they should submit a resume and letter of interest to Jordanne Anderson at jordanne.anderson@masenate.gov by Friday, February 13, 2015. Questions can be directed to Senator Fattman’s office at 617-722-1420.
