Arctic Cold Tonight, Then A Chance of More Snow By Late This Weekend

by Meteorologist Jeb Postle

An arctic cold front is currently moving through the region this morning, providing snow showers and squalls to the area. Behind this front, a return of the Arctic cold air will occur. Low temperatures below zero will be found tonight. The good news is that this cold air outbreak won’t last long, as big ridge of high pressure will build over the south central region of the United States.

Consequently, the ridge of high pressure will create a zonal west-east pattern. With this pattern, this would put the jet stream over our region. During this time, an Alberta Clipper (disturbance) will move into the region beginning Saturday afternoon, with an increase in clouds and snow. As the clipper moves through the region, it will strengthen and transfer energy to a secondary low that will form off the coast of the Mid Atlantic.

This bears watching, as a prolong period of snow is possible from late Saturday into the start of next week. If this pans out, expect a chance of moderate to perhaps heavy snowfall. If the low forms farther off the coast, then less snow is likely for the area. Stay tuned, as I will keep you updated on this snowy scenario.
