After a long, tough winter it seems exciting to focus on Spring activities and make plans for the good weather ahead. Bay State Trail Riders Association, Inc. (BSTRA) has been eagerly awaiting the melting of snow and real Spring weather so they can kick off their season of trail improvement projects and a Cape Cod Get-Away Raffle to help fund them.
BSTRA is pleased to announce two major 2015 projects scheduled to begin this Spring which will improve our local trail system. Both of these projects serve residents who use the trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, running, cross country skiing, dog walking, or just to take a family strollto be out with nature.
The first project is in conjunction with a grant BSTRA received from the Blackstone River Valley Heritage Corridor, Inc. to improve a total of 5.3 miles of trails by re-grading, brushing back, opening drainage swales and adding stone dust to cover sections of cinder stones. This project entails work in the Douglas State Forest and on the Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT) in the towns of Uxbridge and Douglas, MA. Under the terms of the grant, BSTRA pays a 50% match to the money awarded by the grant, giving BSTRA a goal of raising $13,400 to complete this project. Total value of this project is $26,800.
On the second project, located in the Douglas State Forest, BSTRA is working with DCR to connect some trails that are not usable right now. The work entails installing a total of three bridges (one that will be 70 ft. long) and creating a new connecting trail which will make it possible to get to the SNETT from the east side of SW Main St. in Douglas.
