Upton passes Canine By Law

kenne what you looking atAt the May 7 Upton annual town meeting the canine control by law was tabled until the continued meeting on June 4 due to a lengthy discussion on whether dogs should be allowed on school properties.

Town Moderator Dave Loeper advised those who wanedt to amend the bylaw to work with the Town Clerk and Board of Health on an amendment.

Tonight an amended canine by law was brought to the town.

Included in the bylaw:

  • No dogs will be allowed on town beaches in Upton any hour of they day between May 15 and September 30
  • No dogs will be allowed on cemetery grounds at any hour of the day at any time of the year
  • All dogs shall be kept on a leash, while on Town’s Athletic fields, parks, common, public schools, Risteen Building, and Town Hall
  • all of the above does not pertain to service dogs

From what Upton Daily can decipher there is no time restriction for dogs being on school property which is a change from the original bylaw.

The bylaw itself is 5 pages long and the above highlights are just that, highlights.  The official bylaw will be posted on Upton Daily when available.

  1. There seemed to be some confusion on the part of one resident who thought that Upton State Forest is under the jurisdiction of the town. It is owned and managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation which is a state agency. The signs and regulations at the trailhead area clearly say dogs must be leashed at Upton State Forest.
