Letter: Full Day Kindergarten – beyond academics

letterBelow is a letter submitted by Jen Allen Lee of Mendon in response to a campaign to defund the Mendon Upton full day kindergarten program.

Ok, HERE is the deal on full day kindergarten. It’s not the academics which you are posting about. Yes, academics are important, but the REASON most want full day kindergarten is that it sets kids up for success in school and life. It’s all about social relationships, establishing bonds with adults outside of the parental unit, and learning in a nurturing and kind environment. Kids learn boundaries. They learn to respect each other. They learn to depend on people OTHER (teachers) than their parents. They love. They play. They learn. It’s a win/win. Even as a certified teacher, I could not teach my children some of the things they learned in full day kindergarten. They THRIVED. I want that for EVERY SINGLE parent in this district if they so desire. It’s not “warehousing” them as you put it. It’s giving them an opportunity to go out and learn what it means to be a part of this world outside their home. The Toronto Star article was SOLELY based on academic achievement. You need to look beyond that. I leave you with this quote which closes the article: “Brownell noted the study — which has not yet been published — did not examine kids’ social or emotional development. “They are important,” she added, and worth further examination.”

  1. Or perhaps this person has made it their full time job to discredit the school district, the Superintendent, the School Committee, the Selectmen, Members of the Finance Committee and other town officials and volunteers. All you need to do is “Google” his name and add ‘Uxbridge Police” after it and you will see what this person is really about.

  2. My guess is that naysayers are either (1) too far removed from their own children being in kindergarten or (2) never had children and do not understand the benefit of full day kindergarten. To offer full day to only those who can afford it establishes a double standard that I do not want in my school district.

Comments are encouraged! If this is your first time commenting (welcome!). Your email is required but not displayed. I ask town officials to use their real names.
