The town of Mendon is at a crossroad; one path has a clear outcome, the other leads them to the unknown. Mendon is set to choose their path at the ballot on June 30, 2015.
Mendon voters will decide to support or reject the $1.2 million override the town would need to fully fund the Mendon Upton Regional School District’s $31.8 million fiscal year 2016 budget.
Should the measure pass Mendon’s path is clear, voters will have decided to support the school budget through an increase in property taxes.
Should the measure fail, Mendon’s path is left in the hands of the regional school committee and possibly voters from both Mendon and Upton.
The Mendon Upton Regional School Committee discussed tentative dates for a joint town meeting at their last scheduled meeting. The committee said they wanted to give the community an idea of when a joint meeting would be held should Mendon fail the override at the ballot. Committee Chair Phil Dezutter said the joint town meeting would likely be scheduled for July 27 or 28.
If the budget were to be presented at a joint town meeting and pass Mendon would be faced with the tall task of securing the $1.2 million through cuts in town service.
Upton approved the budget on May 18 by an overwhelming majority.
