Next summer, scouts from Upton Boy Scout Troop 132 are leaving for a 12-day high adventure backpacking trek through the mountains of Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Philmont is a working cattle ranch with 137,493 acres of rugged Rocky Mountain wilderness with elevations ranging from 6600 to 12,441 feet. The scouts, ages 13-17, need to be in top physical condition and will spend months training so they are able to carry a 30-45lb pack 5-10 miles each day at very high altitudes. During the time that they are there they hope to see buffalo, bobcats, and mountain lions. The estimated cost of the trip is $2000 per person plus gear. Fundraising efforts have already begun and will continue throughout the year. A special thank you to the VFW for donating space at their flea market.
