Hydrant Flushing

hydrantflushingThe Town of Upton Water and Wastewater Division will begin its water main fall flushing program on October 7; the program is likely to run through October 30th.

Water and Wastewater Supervisor Scott Hennesssey said, “The purpose of water system flushing is to verify the safe operation of hydrants and valves; to remove accumulated sediment or mineral buildup in the pipes; to flush stale water from dead-end streets; to help maintain a proper chlorine residual through the system and continue to supply customers with quality water.”

“Water flushing may result in temporary discoloration of the water, as well as a possible reduction in water pressure,” said Hennesssey. “Water discoloration does not pose any health risk, but may cause staining of laundry and plumbing fixtures,” he said. Residents should avoid doing laundry during the noted flushing period.

Hennessey recommends residents check for cold water discoloration prior to doing laundry; if your water is discolored allow the water to run for a few minutes. If the water does not clear, allow a little time and retry. “Unfortunately, the Town cannot guarantee washing laundry and/or the possibility of discoloration as the water system has been disturbed. Therefore, please check your water carefully before use,” said Hennessey.
