Upton is ready for fresh local fruits/vegetables – CSA pick up location for Upton

vSocial media was a buzz earlier this month when a local mom asked in a facebook poll “how much do you spend a week at the supermarket?” The answers ranged from $120 to $300 with the end result depending on family size, what store, and if organic items were purchased. It was at this point where the conversation morphed in to something different, fresh fruit/vegetables, the dirty dozen, farmers markets, and CSA pick up locations.

What’s the dirty dozen? It’s a list of 12 fruits and vegetables which are reported to be contaminated with the most pesticide residues; the recommendation is to purchase organic or pesticide free from local farmers when buying the “dirty dozen.”  You can learn more about the dirty dozen at thedailygreen.

Organic products are available at local markets but with summer around the corner fresh local pesticide free fruits and vegetables can be purchased at local farmer markets and through a CSA.

We now have two ways to obtain locally grown fruits and vegetables here in Upton. The first is the long established Farm Stand; Dick Kelly’s Farm Stand located on route 140 in Upton. The second is a CSA pick up at A Little Common Sense on Upton Common.

Long Life Farm currently has shares available for the 2013 growing season with the option of picking up your share at A Little Common Sense each Friday (or you may choose every-other-Friday.) A Little Common Sense also offers fresh eggs and local honey.  For more information or to sign up for the CSA visit longlifefarm.com or visit A Little Common Sense.

updated, Lisa from A Little Common Sense just called ~ the CSA is sold out. However- because of the incredible response they received Lisa is now working to get other local farmers/gardeners involved in bringing fresh produce to sell on the store’s front porch this summer!

  1. Hi All,
Unfortunately the shares available for pick up at A Little Common Sense are sold out as of last week. The Friends of Upton Library Raffle is a great opportunity to win 4 weeks of the share. So go purchase those raffle tickets.

    Kind Regards,

Would you want to do a short follow up to your CSA article? The Friends of the Upton library are doing a raffle in conjunction with Garden Day on may 17th. One of the items is a 4 week share at Long Life Farm – the CSA you mentioned. Values at $150. Raffle tickets will be sold at the library for $5 for 3 tickets or $10 for 10 tickets .
