Mendon Upton Regional School District is excited to announce they will partner with Worcester Polytechnic Institute to improve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) instruction in its schools. The WPI staff will work with a power team consisting of district leadership and key teachers to develop a strategic plan for STEM criteria in the district’s curriculum.
“STEM education is an enormous undertaking and is one of our major initiatives in our new strategic plan,” said MURSD Superintendent Dr. Maruszczak when he first spoke of joining the WPI program. “How do we define STEM in our district; I know at the HS we want to do a lot more with job shadowing with meaningful internships in STEM related careers, but what does it look like at the elementary and middle school level.” With the STEM partnership in place the district will be able to hit the ground running. “They’re (WPI) going to look at what we do in various grades, and how we build on it from year to year.” The district plans on focusing on the High School first as they began with that program last year.
On June 11 the district will attend a meeting where the findings of last years WPI pilot program will be presented and work on the MURSD district’s program will begin in July.
