This is a real question, I’m just realizing life has come to this… pick a side for or against potluck?
What is life without a Potluck Dinner? Everyone should experience at least one. I’ve been to many, mostly as a child but some as an adult. My mom would cook something we typically didn’t eat at home to bring as her dish. We were a meat and potato family so we rarely had casseroles. If we did it was the dreaded Tuna Noodle Casserole.
Most of the potlucks we attended were Church or Boy Scout functions. One time my Mom made Baked Ziti with medium shells, we never had that for dinner at home, it was a real treat. I can remember the first bite like it was yesterday, I was leery of the mushy mess, but it was yummy. The best time was when Mom brought “special” fried chicken, it was a crowd favorite. The funny part, it was Kentucky Fried Chicken she had tossed into a casserole dish. We were sworn to secrecy that night. Sorry Mom.
So what does this have to do with taking a side? Some people would like to do away with pot luck dinners. Why? They believe potlucks are dangerous for people who attend. Listing airborne illnesses, under cooked food, contamination, or other illnesses as the risks associated with these events.
On June 11 there will be a hearing on legislation, Bill H.1997 An Act Protecting Public Pot Luck Events, which would prohibit the department of public health or any local board of health to regulate the serving of food that is brought to a potluck event sponsored by a group of individuals or by a religious, charitable, or nonprofit organization.
I just can’t believe it’s come to this, people want to stop potlucks. What will be next? The need to write legislation to protect the right to bring potato salad to your friend’s cookout. What will happen to the Trifle?
Let’s find out what you think. Are potluck dinners dangerous, or do you support this legislation to protect potluck dinners?

That’s so ridiculous. Was this even based on anything, ie did someone get sick? I feel that if legislative measures need to intervene it needs to be based solely on real facts and evidence of real risk, rare occurrences need not apply. why should everyone’s right be infringed on if their isn’t any real risk? Is this being voted on by the state or Federal level? And is by House of reps first, or Senate first? who proposed this bill, and please include their contact info for citizens to call, or any officials people can call to voice their stance. thanks for bringing our attention to this Jen.
