Nipmuc Principal John Clements Talks STEM

stemNipmuc Principal John Clements spoke to the Mendon Upton School Committee Monday June 17 about Nipmuc’s STEM program. The program is being piloted during the 2013-14 school year and will be offered to 25 to 30 students of the class of 2014.  This new initiative focuses on the areas of science, techonology, engineering, and mathematics and will provide the students a way to connect their experiences in Nipmuc’s classrooms with universities, the community, and the workplace. To date 38 students have applied, selection will be based on the drive and interest the students have for the program, all interested students completed an application. Mr. Clements advised Nipmuc applied for and received a $2,500 grant which will help fund the program.

Students who participate in the program will…

  • take challenging courses in STEM-related subjects
  • gain first-hand knowledge of STEM programming at the collegiate level
  • acquire skills for workplace readiness
  • participate in a STEM-related internship

The Nipmuc STEM Program is taking place outside of the regular school day, students will meet this summer, after school and during school vacations.

This program is running in addition to the WPI STEM initiative. John Clements was also pleased to announce Nipmuc will be offering an additional 5 elective classes in engineering/technology.

Mr. Clements would like to see this program grow, unfortunately this year he didn’t have the resources or enough students to offer this program to a second group, but he hopes to in the future. He said the program doesn’t have to be solely STEM, there are writers, historians,  and artists in the community, “we could move this to other subjects as well.”
