Mendon – F. Blaine Hawkes, 86 , of Pleasant St. died Sat. August 17, 2013 in Lydia Taft House, Uxbridge. He was the husband of the late Alma V. (Salve) Hawkes who died in 2012.
Mr. Hawkes was a teacher for the Norfolk County Agricultural School where he was employed for 34 years before retiring in 1987.
Mr. Hawkes was born on January 18th, 1927 in Taunton; the son of the late Wyman E. and Eliza V. (Atherton) Hawkes.
Mr. Hawkes graduated from Mt. Hermon School, in Northfield, MA, class of 1946, and then went on to the University of Maine where he graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree.
Mr. Hawkes was a member of the National American Farmers Association, a former member and leader of the 4H Club, Worcester County Advisory, a member of the 7th Degree (The Grange), and Past President of the New England Hereford Cattle Association. He was a member, and past chairman of the Conservation Committee in Mendon for 18 years and was the former owner of the Arthur Robinson farm in Mendon.
He took great pride in sharing his knowledge, teachings, and passion of animals and agriculture to all – both young and old, and especially to his family.
Mr. Hawkes is survived by his two sons Peter W. Hawkes of Mendon, and Charles B. Hawkes of Whitinsville; one daughter Betsy C. Brady of Farmington, ME; and 7 Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wed. Aug. 21 at 6 PM in the Buma Funeral Home, 101 North Main St., Rte. 122, Uxbridge.
Visiting hours will be Wed. from 3 – 6 PM in the funeral home prior to the funeral service.
Interment will be in Chase Cemetery in East Wyndam, ME at a later date.
