Upton Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians take Oath

On Monday September 23, 2013  Upton Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians gathered in front of Old Niagra to take the Oath of a Firefighter and Emergency Technician. The Oath was administered by Kelly McElreath, Upton Town Clerk. It seemed fitting for the men and women of Upton to take their oath in front of Old Niagra. In 1860 the Fire Department was reorganized and the Niagara Engine was put into service. A crew of sixty men were appointed to man the engine. The crew’s motto was “We Go When Duty Calls.”  For forty years this group of men were often referred to as the “Niagaras.” According to Chief Goodale’s historical write-up the era of the  “Niagaras” was the most celebrated era of firefighting in Upton.
