Is Erin Cox’s story falling apart?

Last week Erin Cox was being called a hero and this week information reported on social media is disputing the title. The Valley Patriot is reporting “Law Enforcement sources tell the Valley Patriot this morning that the media hype surrounding North Andover High  School student Erin Cox being suspended for allegedly giving her friend a ride from a drinking party was … a lie.”

What the media reported was the details of the student and her family and their attorney, and they just ran with it as if her version was fact, a North Andover Police Officer told The Valley Patriot Monday. ‘We now know that her version is in dispute, and there is a lot of evidence to show she was at that party a lot longer than she claimed.  – Valley Patriot

The Raw Story is reporting, “police say that students and parents at the party claim that Cox had been there much longer, and that only parents drove the students home.”

In a Facebook thread shared in a comments section, students accuse Cox of being at the party for an extended period of time and claim she was also drinking – – to the point of puking.  Upton Daily cannot confirm the truthfulness of any claims made on facebook.

Donations accepted by the Erin Cox fund are being returned.

Dear Contributors, Thank you all for your generousity to the Erin Cox Fund. I have been informed by Erin’s mother that she would like your donations to go to MADD or to the charity of your choice. “Go Fund Me” is a great tool for donating to noble causes, however I have learned that the Erin Cox story is still developing and I believe it is best to refund all donations at this time. Like all of you, I wanted to do something good for a student that seemed to be unfairly treated by her high school. This fund is something that I would have created for anyone in need of social justice. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible generousity. At this time, it is best to accept the refund and if the Erin Cox story still interests you please follow the North Andover Citizen online.

Do you still stand behind your position that the school should reverse their punishment?

  1. Once again, can’t just jump to conclusions. We never knew the whole story. And remember we *still* don’t know the whole story. News outlets need to be focused on journalism, reporting without prejudice the facts of an event which has already occurred and not publishing until it is confirmed and not speculating because facts are unknown.
