Upton Rejects Medical Marijuana Moratorium at Town Meeting

Wasn’t able to attend the meeting tonight but this came over the twitter feed. Just to clarify, this does not mean Upton has rejected Marijuana dispensaries. The temporary moratorium would have given the town the time they were requesting to develop a plan as to where this type of facility should be zoned. It would have delayed anyone from proposing a medical marijuana dispensary for a closed period of time.

  1. The vote was to *NOT* put a moratorium on MMTCs in Upton. The Planning Board had a year to address any zoning concerns (if any) since last year’s state vote. The moratorium was requested in order to give the Planning Board another year before needing to bring any proposed changes to the voters. The Upton Board of Health voted *against* the moratorium.

The state has already dictated that no community may ban an MMTC. The state is currently processing applications for MMTCs in Worcester County, including Milford and Grafton. Those applications enter the second round with specific site information on Nov 21st (if memory serves me). If an MMTC were to apply to reside within the Town of Upton, it would follow the regulations outlined by the state and our own zoning by-laws.

To confirm this information, please watch the video of the Special Town Meeting on the Town’s website once it becomes available. Above are the facts presented at the STM.

  2. How sad is that for the millions of people who suffer from the effects of Cancer treatments and people who have Chronic pain and eating disorders…Apparently the Town of Upton doesn’t care about it’s people. They rather see them take synthetic DRUGS then one that GOD provided….Shame Shame Shame Upton.

    1. Ummm…God also provided their illnesses. And since we are created by Him, presumably He wanted us to invent drugs, or at least has allowed it. Right?

    2. You must be high yourself. Although many studies have shown the positive effects of marijuana and I believe “some” people should have access there will be too many people with fraudulent medical cards. Massachusetts will be no different than CA or CO with bogus prescription for sub-par doctors. Plenty of people are getting fraudulent prescriptions for legal drugs now by doctor shopping.
By Upton trying to keep a dispensary out of town they are simply looking to protect the town from the side effects of that traffic coming through. As it stands now there are only 5 dispensaries allowed in Worcester County. Why does one have to be in Upton? My only comment would be the town should not have taken a stand and drawing attention to itself. I truly do not believe a dispensary owner would look to Upton to set up a business. Milford, Worcester, Lowell, Fitchburg all sound like better business opportunities.

      1. Scott – In addition to the Milford and Grafton applications, there are applications in Worcester (5), Auburn, Fitchburg, and I think one other, but I can’t remember them all. You can hear the list on the STM link at the town website.
