The Upton Police Department is assisting the Upton Fire Department at 25 Maple Avenue at the Grafton/Upton Rail Yard, for a minor chemical spill, according the Upton Police Department Facebook page. Hazmat regulations call for a 150′ evacuation from the spill site. Currently no homes or businesses are within the evacuation zone.

They are getting prepared to “suit up” per the scanner
I called the Fire Department a half-hour ago and they had no information for me at all, other than “you don’t want to be down-wind”. When I remarked that wasn’t very reassuring, they told me “we mean you shouldn’t be over there”. I asked what, exactly, was spilled, how much, where, if the town’s water supply has been affected, whether the supply will be tested more frequently, what’s involved with the cleanup, etc., and was repeatedly told that they didn’t have any information to give out. Not very helpful at all. Since the authorities are involved now, I wonder if this will be a matter of public record and/or something that has to be disclosed in real estate transactions? Why aren’t they telling us what was spilled? I hope this incident is reported to the STB – surely this can help our cause?
Can you call the UPD and find out what chemical and what amount, and where exactly this spill took place? Thanks. This is very concerning when considering the types of chemicals handled there, even a small spill can create very harmful effects.
