Nipmuc Regional High School Students Raise $4,000 for American Cancer Society

On November 16 and 17 Nipmuc Regional High School Juniors Evan Offord, Jack Gallagher, and Tyler Costello held a charity basketball tournament raising funds for the American Cancer Society. They chose the American Cancer Society because they wanted to join in the fight to find a cure.

In addition to raising funds the event fulfilled their DECA community project. For their project this year they knew they wanted to do a sports tournament together. Evan suggested soccer, Tyler hockey, and Jack basketball. They determined basketball seemed the best choice.

Jack, Tyler, and Evan said the most successful part of the tournament was the fluidity of the games. “Everything worked like clockwork.” They were able to maintain excellent communication throughout the process with each other as well as with the coaches and refs. The most challenging part of the project was getting the message out to teams that there was a tournament. They emailed teams by scouring the internet for sources and made cold calls to coaches. “It was nerve-racking, a week before the tournament we still needed two teams.”

The event was a huge success and Tyler, Evan, and Jack plan to hold the charity tournament again next year. “We hope to run the tournament next year with even better results with the reputation we have garnered as a respectable and efficient basketball tournament in the Worcester area.”

In addition to Jack, Evan, and Tyler 27 other volunteers, mostly students from Nipmuc Regional High School, helped make the event a success.

The event raised $3,990 and Jack, Evan, and Tyler donated $10 to make it an even $4,000. Although there is no written record they have been told by their DECA Coach Mr. Perras this is the highest amount raised at a DECA fundraiser this year and as far back as Mr. Perras can remember.
