Upton Treasurer Collector Ken Glowacki Responds to DOR Letter

submitted by Upton Treasurer Collector Ken Glowacki

uptondaily1pngThe article #10 along with the DOR letter favoring an appointed treasurer presumes there is not enough talent in Upton to fill the position of Treasurer/Collector. I disagree with this and convinced that we have many suitable potential candidates in a town our size.  It also presumes that those talented potential candidates would not run for this office which I also do not agree with.  During each of the last few re-election years many inquiries were made by potential candidates.

It also presumes that the citizens of Upton don’t have the good sense to elect a qualified candidate. Those same citizens are asked to attend open town meeting, vote on multimillion dollar budgets, pass judgment on over 40 articles this year, but do NOT know enough to make distinctions between candidates and participate in an election.

Given the foregoing, and that I have 1 year left of this term in office as well as plans to run for re-election…I am not sure what is being fixed or why this is coming up now.

Being elected evokes a sensitivity to the problems the taxpayers face. These are my neighbors. The people to who I report and owe my allegiance. This is something that can’t be expected from a bureaucrat who, according to the selectmen, will probably not even be from the Town.

An independent voice is important to our town. It promotes discussion and debate. This will be lost if the position is appointed.

Finally and most importantly, the article asks the citizens to give up their sacred right to vote which they have had for hundreds of years.
